How to Clean and Care for Adult Toys

Proper care can help keep intimate products clean, comfortable and functioning as intended. Because toys differ in their materials, construction and water resistance, the manufacturer’s instructions should always be your first source of guidance.

1. Check the care instructions

Before cleaning a toy, review its packaging, product manual or manufacturer’s website. Confirm:

  • Whether it is waterproof, water-resistant or not designed for water exposure
  • Whether batteries should be removed
  • Whether the charging port requires a cover
  • Which cleaners are compatible with the material
  • Whether any removable parts must be cleaned separately

Waterproof and water-resistant do not necessarily mean the same thing. Avoid submerging a product unless its instructions specifically permit it.

2. Disconnect the power

Turn the toy off and disconnect charging cables before cleaning. Remove replaceable batteries when the manufacturer recommends doing so. Keep charging ports, controls and electrical openings dry unless the product is specifically designed for full submersion.

3. Use an appropriate cleaner

For many products, warm water and a small amount of mild, unscented soap may be appropriate. A cleaner specifically made for intimate products may also be used when compatible with the toy’s material.

Avoid bleach, household disinfectants, heavily fragranced products, abrasive cleaners and strong solvents unless the manufacturer specifically approves them. These substances may irritate sensitive skin or damage the product’s surface.

4. Clean every exposed surface

Wash your hands before handling the product. Gently clean the toy’s surface, including seams, curves and textured areas where residue may collect.

For products that cannot be submerged, apply the approved cleaner to a damp, soft cloth instead of placing the product under running water. Never allow liquid to enter an unprotected charging port or battery compartment.

Rinse away any remaining soap when the care instructions allow rinsing.

5. Dry it completely

Pat the toy dry with a clean, lint-free towel and allow it to air-dry completely before storage. Trapped moisture can affect electronic components and create an unpleasant storage environment.

Do not reconnect the charger, reinstall batteries or place the product into a sealed container while it is still damp.

6. Store products separately

Once completely dry, place the toy in its original packaging, a clean storage pouch or a dedicated container. Separate storage can prevent dust accumulation, surface damage and unwanted contact between different materials.

Keep intimate products away from:

  • Direct sunlight
  • Extreme heat or cold
  • Humid storage areas
  • Oils or chemicals that could damage the surface
  • Loose batteries, sharp objects and exposed charging cables

7. Inspect before and after use

Check the product periodically for cracks, discoloration, unusual odors, damaged cords, loose battery covers or changes in texture. Stop using a product if its surface becomes damaged or difficult to clean.

Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions for rechargeable products. Long-term battery care varies by product, so avoid assuming every device should be stored fully charged.

Additional care when sharing

When a product is shared, follow its cleaning instructions carefully and consider using a new compatible barrier for each person or body area. Cleaning reduces residue, but ordinary home cleaning should not be treated as sterilization.

Build a simple care routine

A dependable routine is straightforward: read the instructions, clean the product appropriately, rinse when permitted, dry it completely and store it carefully. Taking a few minutes after each use can help protect both the product and your experience.
